Spring into Fun: Budget-Friendly Family Activities for April
Hey there! As April showers begin to promise May flowers, it’s the perfect time to explore some fresh, fun, and budget-friendly family activities that the whole family can enjoy. Below are some of our favorite ways to make the most of this vibrant month without breaking the bank.
Embrace the Great Outdoors with a Family Picnic
Spring is in full swing, and what better way to enjoy the warming weather than with a family picnic? We love heading to our local park with a cooler packed with homemade goodies. I usually involve the kids in preparing simple sandwiches, fruit salads, and some homemade iced tea. It’s an affordable outing that gets us all outside, and the kids have a blast riding their bikes, playing frisbee or hide-and-seek. Plus, Teigan can spend hours on the playground, which means she’s guaranteed a good night’s sleep!
Side note: The other day we went to the park and Teigan saw a field of dandelions. Teigan loves flowers and she always stops to admire them. This time she asked me to help her put them throughout her hair. She looked so stinkin’ cute. I took the opportunity to show her how to make a flower crown and she was amazed. It’s such a simple thing that didn’t cost any money. Sometimes as parents I think we overcomplicate things but sometimes its the simplest things that captures our kids attentions.
DIY Craft Day: Celebrate Earth Day with Upcycled Art
April is home to Earth Day, and this year, we decided to tackle a DIY craft project that not only entertains but also teaches valuable lessons about recycling. We gathered up materials we already had—empty boxes, cartons, paper towel rolls, and other odds and ends —and turned them into an ice cream truck box car for Teigan. Yes, we made an ice cream truck inspired by Teigan’s toy Lego ice cream truck. It was really cool seeing the kids come together and brainstorm items they could use. Around here we love boxes and bubble wrap – it’s a delightful way to spend a rainy afternoon!
Windy Day Fun: Kite Flying
April is infamous for windy and rainy days here in New England. Windy days are perfect for kite flying. I know drones are the modern-day Kite but I still like the old-fashioned version. Thankfully, my kids share similar sentiments towards kites. We picked up a few from our local Dollar Tree and went to the park to fly our kites. It was a joy to watch the kids running around with their kites against the blue sky—all for just a few dollars.
Movie Marathon Weekend: Family Favorites on a Dime
Who says you need to go out to have fun? One of our favorite activities is hosting a family movie marathon right in our living room. Each child picks a movie, and then we hunker down with popcorn and homemade snacks. It’s cost-effective, and everyone gets a turn to share their favorite film, which sparks lovely conversations and laughter. This April, Teigan chose a classic cartoon, Gray went for a Goose Bumps movie, and Liv picked a teen drama. Blankets, pajamas, and our comfy couch made it the perfect family night in.
Start a Family Garden: Grow Your Food and Fun
April is also a fantastic time to start a garden, and this can be a great project that doesn’t require much cash but offers a lot of returns. We decided to plant some easy herbs, fruit, and vegetables in small pots for our porch garden. Not only does this teach the kids about where food comes from, but it also gives them responsibilities. Watering and eventually harvesting our crops offer ongoing activities that keep everyone engaged and excited to see the fruits of their labor.
Spring into Some Budget-Friendly Family Activities
These budget-friendly family activities are just a few ways we’re making April memorable without straining our wallet. Whether it’s enjoying the beauty of nature, crafting with recycled materials, or enjoying a cozy movie night, there’s always a way to have affordable fun as a family.
