Creating a 90’s Inspired Summer: Fun Activities for Kids on a Budget

A young girl joyfully running through sprinklers on a sunny day, enjoying a classic 90’s inspired summer activity.

Remember the summers of our childhood? Summer activities consisted of long days spent biking around the neighborhood, sticky fingers from popsicles, and endless water balloon fights until the sun dipped below the horizon. Those were the days of pure, simple joy, unburdened by the constant buzz of technology and the pressure to spend a fortune on entertainment. I can still picture those sun-soaked afternoons, filled with laughter and adventure of all the neighborhood kids playing together. Truly, we were the Backyardigans of our time.

Fast forward to today, and while the world has changed, our desire to create magical summer memories for our kids hasn’t. My kids, Teigan, Grayson, and Livi, just finished school last week, and they’re buzzing with excitement about our summer bucket list. Teigan can’t wait to go swimming and make homemade popsicles, Grayson is eager to hit the bike trails, and Livi is dreaming of epic water balloon fights and a fun-filled family vacation. As a mom on a budget, I’m determined to give them an incredible summer without breaking the bank.

So, how do we blend the nostalgic charm of a 90’s summer with some fresh, new-age fun—all while keeping an eye on our wallets? In this post, I’ll share a mix of classic and modern budget-friendly activities that will help you create unforgettable summer memories with your kids. Let’s dive into a season of fun, laughter, and adventure, all without the financial stress. Ready to plan the best summer ever? Let’s get started!

Teigan, my adventurous 5-year-old, is determined to learn how to swim this summer so she can keep up with her older brother and sister. She’s already sporting her favorite watermelon bathing suit, excited to dive into the water and make a splash. My kids love nothing more than a day spent at the sprinkler park, the local pool, or exploring the nearby lakes. These classic 90’s summer activities are not only incredibly fun but also budget-friendly. Let’s dive into some timeless ways to beat the heat and create lasting memories.

Swimming Fun

There’s something magical about the simple joy of swimming. Whether it’s a trip to the community pool, a day at the lake, or setting up a DIY backyard water park, swimming offers endless fun for kids. Plus, it’s a great way to stay active and cool off on hot summer days.

  • Community Pools: Many local pools are free or offer affordable day passes or seasonal memberships. Check out any free swim days or discounted rates for families.
  • Lakes and Beaches: If you’re lucky enough to live near a lake or beach, take advantage of the natural water spots for a day of swimming and picnicking. Pack a lunch and make it a full day of fun.
  • DIY Backyard Water Park: For a budget-friendly option, set up a sprinkler or inflatable pool in the backyard. Add some water toys, and you’ve got an instant water park at home.
  • DIY Slip-Slide: Grab a tarp, add a little soap, and put the hose to run water on top. The kids will have a blast sliding down.

Bike Riding Adventures

Biking was a staple of 90’s summers, and it’s still a fantastic way to explore and enjoy the outdoors. Grayson can’t wait to hit the bike trails. It’s an activity that’s both fun and healthy, perfect for family bonding time. We recently upgraded his bike to a mountain bike that allows him to ride on dirt and do tricks. His father is teaching him some of his back-in-the-day tricks. I am usually on the sidelines doing sidewalk chalk with Teigan and saying a little prayer that I don’t have to rush either of them to the hospital. But you can keep it more low-key with these options:

  • Local Parks and Trails: Find nearby parks or trails where your family can bike safely. It’s an excellent way to discover new areas and enjoy nature.
  • Neighborhood Rides: Sometimes, the simplest adventures are the best. Riding around your neighborhood can be just as exciting for young kids.
  • Bike Maintenance: Keep an eye out for community bike maintenance workshops or learn some basic DIY fixes to keep your bikes in top shape without spending much.

Fun DIY Summer Activities

Some of the best summer memories are made right at home, with a little creativity and a lot of heart. We used to have family game and movie nights every Friday, and I’m excited to bring back that tradition this summer. We also loved our backyard projector movie nights on hot summer evenings, but since moving, our balcony will now serve as the perfect venue for these cozy nights. Here are some DIY activities that are sure to bring joy and fun without stretching your budget.

Homemade Popsicles

Making homemade popsicles is a fun and delicious way to cool off. Plus, it’s an activity that kids of all ages can enjoy, from choosing their favorite flavors to pouring the mixtures into molds. Sidenote, I finally found popsicle molds I love. They are silicone so the pops are easy to pop out and they keep the stick positioned in the center. These specific molds make 12 popsicles so I have 2 and we make 24 popsicles at a time. The kids love making popsicles and trying new flavor combinations.

This year we’re trying sour gummy worm popsicles. Teigan saw it on her tablet and asked if we could do it. Sidenote, I love that Teigan loves giving me her input for family activities. She is always thinking of new ideas and usually, they are pretty cool. As for the sour gummy worm popsicles, I may play around with different combinations. Some with lemonade or lemon soda and some with fruit juices and freeze. The thing about popsicles is that they are super easy and simple to make. Don’t overcomplicate it!

  • Simple Recipes: Use fresh fruit, juice, or yogurt to create refreshing and healthy popsicles. Blend fruits like strawberries, blueberries, or mangoes with a bit of water or juice, and pour into molds.
  • Budget Tips: Use seasonal fruits or ingredients you already have at home to save money. This can be a great way to use up any leftover fruit before it goes bad.
  • Personal Story: Teigan’s excitement about making popsicles together, carefully choosing her favorite fruit combinations and eagerly waiting for them to freeze.

Water Balloon Fights

Nothing says summer like an epic water balloon fight. Livi is already gearing up for some serious water fun, and this activity is a fantastic way to keep cool and active.

  • Biodegradable Balloons: Choose biodegradable balloons to keep the fun environmentally friendly. Fill them up and have a designated safe area for the fight.
  • DIY Refill Stations: Create refill stations with buckets of water and extra balloons so the fun can keep going without too many pauses.
  • Personal Story: Livi’s anticipation for an epic water balloon fight, planning strategic maneuvers, and laughing as everyone gets soaked.

Modern Twists on Summer Fun

Let’s bring a bit of the old-school charm into the modern age with some fun twists on our favorite summer activities. And even though we’ve traded our backyard for an oversized balcony, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy those warm summer evenings.

Tech-Free Family Nights

Family games and movie nights are a perfect way to bond and unwind. Reignite this beloved tradition and create new memories with a blend of classic and modern entertainment.

  • Family Game Nights: Dust off those board games and card decks for a night of friendly competition. From classics like Monopoly and Scrabble to new favorites, there’s something for everyone. For an extra touch of nostalgia, consider introducing your kids to some 90’s video games.
  • Movie Nights: Pick a theme for each movie night—like 90’s classics, animated favorites, or family-friendly comedies. Create a cozy setup in the living room with blankets, pillows, and, of course, plenty of popcorn.

Backyard (or Balcony) Projector Movie Night

One of our favorite summer activities was setting up a projector for movie nights in the backyard. Even though we’ve moved and now have an oversized balcony instead, we can still recreate that magic with a few adjustments.

  • Projector Setup: Use a portable projector and hang a white sheet or screen on the balcony wall. Add some comfy seating with outdoor cushions or bean bags.
  • Movie Snacks: Keep the tradition alive with a snack bar featuring popcorn, homemade popsicles, and other summer treats. Let the kids help in making the snacks for an added element of fun.
  • Theme Nights: Rotate the movie selections to keep things exciting. Try animated films, classic family movies, or even a series night where you watch a trilogy over a few weeks.

By combining these modern twists with the timeless fun of family nights, you’ll create an atmosphere of joy and togetherness. Plus, these activities are perfect for staying within budget while making the most of your summer evenings.

Staycation Ideas

Staycations have become a beloved tradition for our family, offering the thrill of a getaway without the hefty price tag. We love exploring local gems, finding discounted hotels, and using credit card points to maximize our adventures. Acting like tourists in our own city or nearby areas not only saves money but also creates cherished memories. Here’s how to plan a budget-friendly staycation that your family will adore.

  • Discounted Hotels: Look for hotels offering special deals or discounts. Sites like Groupon, Expedia, and Hotels.com often have great offers. Utilize credit card points for free or reduced-rate stays.
  • Hotel Amenities: Choose hotels with amenities that your family loves, like indoor pools, breakfast buffets, and easy access to local attractions. A hotel near the beach or with a great view can turn a simple staycation into a special adventure.
  • Local Attractions: Act like tourists and explore local museums, parks, zoos, and historical sites. Many places offer free or discounted entry on certain days. Make a list of must-see spots in your area that you’ve never visited before.
  • Theme Days: Create themed days to make each day of your staycation unique. Have a beach day, a city exploration day, or a nature adventure day. Pack a picnic and spend the day outdoors at a local park or nature reserve.

Personal Story: Grayson’s Winter Birthday Staycation

Grayson’s birthday falls in the winter, and one of our most memorable staycations was a weekend getaway to a hotel on the beach with an indoor pool. Despite a snowstorm, we watched big snowflakes drift to the ground as the tide rose and swam in the heated indoor pool, laughing and enjoying the magical contrast of the wintery scene outside and the warm, fun atmosphere inside. These moments of joy and laughter are what staycations are all about—finding happiness and adventure close to home.

With these staycation ideas, you can create a series of mini-vacations throughout the summer, offering your family the excitement of a getaway without straining your budget.

Practical Tips for a Budget-Friendly Summer

Planning and budgeting are key to ensuring your summer is filled with fun and adventure without financial stress. Here’s how to make the most of your budget while creating unforgettable experiences for your family.

Planning and Budgeting

1. Create a Summer Activity Fund:

  • Savings Jar: Start a summer activity savings jar where everyone can contribute. Spare change and small contributions add up over time and can fund special outings.
  • Budget Allocation: Allocate a specific portion of your monthly budget to summer activities. Knowing how much you have to spend helps in planning and prevents overspending.

2. Utilize Free and Low-Cost Activities:

  • Local Events: Keep an eye out for free local events such as concerts, festivals, and community fairs. These events often provide entertainment and activities at no cost.
  • Library Programs: Many local libraries offer free summer programs for kids, including storytimes, craft sessions, and reading challenges.
  • Nature Exploration: Explore local parks, hiking trails, and nature reserves. These outings offer adventure and discovery without any cost.

3. Coupons and Discounts:

  • Groupon and Deal Sites: Check sites like Groupon for deals on activities, restaurants, and family-friendly outings. You can find significant discounts on a variety of activities.
  • Memberships: If you plan to visit a local attraction multiple times, consider investing in a membership. This can often save you money in the long run and provide additional perks.

4. Plan Ahead:

  • Activity Schedule: Create a summer calendar with planned activities and outings. Having a schedule helps you spread out expenses and ensures you’re making the most of your time.
  • Meal Planning: Plan your meals around your activities. Packing picnics and snacks for outings can save a lot of money compared to eating out.

Personal Story: Budget-Friendly Summer Planning

Planning ahead has been a game-changer for our family. By setting a budget and researching free or low-cost activities, we’ve been able to enjoy a variety of experiences without overspending. One summer, we discovered a local park with free concerts every Friday night. It became a weekly tradition, where we’d pack a picnic and enjoy music under the stars—a simple yet magical experience that cost us nothing but brought immense joy.
